All the other colors are just colors, but purple seems to have a soul. Purple is not just a noun and an adjective but also a verb. when you look at it, it’s looking back at you” -Uniek Swain, screenwriter

Hey guys! Its Jamie! One of my favorite things on the internet is sifting through swatches on the Pantone website (www.pantone.com). The swatches not only show different tonal values, depths, hues, and flavors of what once seemed like an already diverse color, but also gives you creative and animated names for each color (which i LOVE when I’m communicating colors with guests and Designers here at the Mastery!).
With purple specifically, it has such a great assortment and range of feelings.. it can be warm, or cool. It can be loud or pastel. It can shout artificial grape soda, or whisper soft and airy lavender. With last weeks Inspiration Friday here at the Mastery, we approached our gorgeous model Julie with a few different voices of purple, some loud, some comforting. With Fall upon us, Julie needed a transition from her vibrant and playful teals and blues, and with her porous, processed canvas, there’s quite a few ingredients that needed to go into the mix. We wanted to achieve a comforting, feminine, and rich fall look for her and to compliment the season change. Please enjoy these autumn-influenced formulas and inspiration, one for you to enjoy, and one for your guests to enjoy <3

Today’s blog takes a small spin in a different direction. I think it’s a a great Friday for us to tap into what really, truly inspires us.. the small and big things. And I’m not talking about which hairdressers blow your mind, or which trends are so hot you can’t look away, I’m talking about shaking things up and doing what hasn’t been done, looking at things that DON’T get looked at, and dreaming of things that you don’t normally find in the clouds. When there is so much incredible work around you and so many beautiful hair color combinations and flavors, it can pull you in a lot of directions and influence you and your work. This could be a very good and inspire new ideas and thoughts, or this could be a distraction, and draw you away from your aesthetic or goal. So, what I like to do here and there is have a little “palette cleansing”, kind of like what you would do between courses during a dinner party. Or like sniffing coffee beans between testing out new perfumes. We all need to have that burst of palette cleansing in order to separate and focus on the uniqueness and strength of each individual thought or inspiration.
These are some themes or thoughts that i like to revisit when I’m looking for that “pick me up”.. I hope to hear from you guys so I can add some themes to my “inspiration protocol”, if you will:

1)Always have a whimsical approach. I like to keep a light heart about things. Being too serious is never all that much fun. So, fall in lust with something that makes you smile, makes you giggle, makes you blush, and makes you feel young and spontaneous. I love coming across images that just evoke those feelings and those thoughts. They open up my think engine to things that are fresh and playful.
2) Look for a little push in design. Go surf a website with crazy, obscure product design. Or, find some really modern furniture or architecture that makes your mind bend a little differently from how it would normally.
3) Look for color in things that have NOTHING to do with hair color. Find a beautiful landscape, check out some color theory history, find some colors that are so vivid they almost look like they should have a smell or taste. Opening up to just looking at color for what it is and how its making me feel at that moment is a great way to think up formulations, color placements, or just creating a mood with your hair design.
4) Look to the details. There’s nothing I love more than flipping through a magazine or hopping from website to website catching small, minute details that make me think “Hey, I’ve never seen that do that before”. Those little details are the very thing that separate one idea from another. They are placed there for a purpose, and when I’m strapped for an idea or I’m having that “writer’s block” feeling with inspiration, I’ll just look to something that gives me a moment of questioning and wondering.
5) And lastly, look for things that speak to you from nature. Let’s face it, it’s getting harder and harder to do something that absolutely no one has ever done before in the history of time itself. So, everything around you is constantly changing in nature, try playing off of that! Something that really makes me tick is seeing art and design that takes an element of nature and puts it somewhere it doesn’t belong. Having that hint of discord gets me thinking outside the box a little bit.
Everyone has their go-to when it comes to finding inspiration, tell us some of your themes or rules you go by when you’re looking to “cleanse that palette”. What are some of your routines that your creativity needs in order to keep things fresh and fun?!

I look forward to getting inspired by all of you!

xoxo Jamie

Goodbye fall…and hellooooo spring! Spring and Summer 2013 that is! While watching the  parade of textiles during Paris Fashion Week I started to get carried away imagining my perfect closet. Clothing, specifically textiles and the cut of the fabric inspire me both on and off set. I love looking at different colors and sheens combined with varied textures to create a look which often transports us to another time and place. The amazing part to me is the fact that the same is possible with hair and when married with all the elements of a final look you can create and endless array of concepts and characters.

I wanted to share with you all some of my favorites. I have to say … this year, clothing wise, Paris stole my heart. What do you guys think?

Matte. Shiny. Glossy. Knit. Smooth.

White.

Structured. Vintage. Waist Highlight.

Retro.

Flowing. Pleated. Neon. Pastel. Contrast.

Boogie Nights.

Bold. Fitted. Layered.

Black.

Cut: Jake Khan for The Mastery
Color: Jamie Anderbery for The Mastery
Photography: Mike Cooke
Make-up: Stephanie Floyd
Art direction: Lucie Doughty

The inspiration behind this step-by-step photo shoot was a little twist on what we saw up and coming for Fall 2012. There’s a lot of pastel out there on runways and on celebrity hair, whether it’s splashed on a trendy ombré color technique or because we don’t want to let go of that light and airy summer feeling. Then there’s the fluorescents and the neons. These bold colors make a strong impression on us and liven hair color up with flavors like grape soda, lemon zest, maraschino cherry, and blue raspberry. Fluorescents make people smile, they shed a fresh light on the day, and they always catch an eye or two. By putting these two contrasting elements together, we see a beautiful balance. The placement for this color played off of Julie’s haircut using large curved and zig-zagged sections. We wanted everything to melt together, but still have a strong separation, especially for different styling options.

Formulas:
Peach: 2 oz Honey Beige Flash Finish + 3 orange color shots + 2 yellow color shots + 1 drop of red
Strawberry: 2 oz Strawberry Flash Finish + 3 red color shots
Mellow Yellow: Equal parts yellow and clear Ink Works + 4 drops of Blue

Here are a few images from a design editorial that really caught my eye while planning the shoot. What do you notice about the crashes of subtle, soft grace and brave, intense fervency in these colors? How does the meeting of these fluorescents and pastels inspire you and your color palette?

Color is a beautiful thing with a very loud voice, a lot of different tastes and flavors, and a forceful power and agenda to make you feel however it wants to make you feel. Enjoy this step-by-step, I really look forward to sharing more with you!

Hey Mastery Fans, Nicoletta here! So excited about todays entry!

Any one who knows me knows I love a few specific things, beauty, fashion, sunglasses, milan, coffee, yoga…but, I digress.

Lets go back to those first four while we check out the AMAZING beauty looks at Milan Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2013 which will set our beauty pace for next year!

I wear my sunglasses at night…

Which were your favorite shades from the passarellas (italian for runway!)? We Love Pradas Flower Power thick frame shades in the middle!

Liptastic Love Affair!

From coral to strawberry to bubble gum … pop color matte lips are proving to be next springs big trend. Make sure to pair them up with a nude eye or amazing glasses for maximum lip attention!

The eyes have it…

One thing is for sure when the lips nuded out the eyes smoldered. Next season seems to be all about either or…but with graffic lines like these who needs bold lips?

Which Milan Fashion Week look do you all like the most? For me, it is the ever classic every risk taking prada, I love their modern edge with 40′s flare.

Check back in next week for a Paris Fasion Week Review as Fashion Month comes to an end!

Ciao!

Hey Everyone! This is Matt, your Concierge Design Leader at The Mastery by Esani. At The Mastery we own the fact that knowledge is power so each month we will be bringing you a featured product with tips, tricks and key facts to help you pick the right potion to put a spell on your hair.

In his 2004 book The Paradox of Choice, psychologist Barry Schwartz wrote that “Choice is what enables us to tell the world who we are and what we care about.”  In many ways, our choices define us, down to the last detail.  Schwartz goes on to argue that having “too many” options can actually stress us out and even make us less happy.  So what is it that defines whether having lots of choices is a good thing or a bad thing?  The answer is knowledge.  Being informed makes all the difference in whether decision-making is a pleasant experience or an overwhelming one.

If you’ve ever had to shop for a car, you know that while two vehicles may look the same on the outside, the real difference is defined by what’s under the hood.  It’s not like everybody has the time or resources to become an automotive expert overnight, so how do you make that choice with confidence and peace of mind?  Choosing the right hair product is no different; while two products may seem very similar at first glance, they very well may achieve vastly different results.

With the recent release of Paul Mitchell’s new Blonde line, we now have access to a lot of awesome new products, including Forever Blonde™ Dramatic Repair™; but what’s the difference between Dramatic Repair™ and, say, Paul Mitchell’s Super Strong® Liquid Treatment™?  Just like with two similar cars, the difference is what’s inside.

Super Strong® Liquid Treatment™ contains marine extracts and vegetable proteins which replenish every strand of your hair; Super Strong® Complex and UV Protection replace lost minerals and proteins, simultaneously repairing your hair and sealing your split ends.  Daily use can increase the strength of your hair by up to 60%!

Forever Blonde™ Dramatic Repair™, on the other hand, is loaded with Paul Mitchell’s exclusive KerActive protein, as well as moisture-replenishing safflower oleosomes and macadamia nut oil.  It smooths and strengthens thirsty hair, and contains a potent anti-static, detangling conditioner which helps to repair frizzy, damaged hair.

While the aesthetic choices we make may not necessarily define who we are, they undeniably affect, on some level, how we’re perceived by others.  This provides an opportunity; it can either overwhelm and discourage us, or empower and inspire us, making us happier people.  If you’re having trouble choosing which products you need to achieve your desired look, stop by The Mastery and see one of our Product Knowledge experts.  We can help you make an informed decision, and maybe help you come one decision closer to being able to “tell the world who you are and what you care about,” with confidence and peace of mind.

Hello again Mastery followers! Nicoletta here … I am so thrilled to be able to spend and extra day or two with you this week thanks to all the award show and fashion hustle bustle!
London has wrapped up their shows and Milan is on their way to doing the same. But before we bring you the looks “al italiana” I wanted to share my favorite London runway trends!
Catwalks were filled with trends that carried over flawlessly from New York fashion week. We saw uber shiny sleek ponies, tousled locks with middle parts and deep side high shine sleek comb-overs. However, as usual Londoners put their own spin on the late 60′s early 70′s hair revival with higher texture/higher volume adaptations…
When the hair wasn’t reinforcing the trends for spring 2013 it was being replaced by hats of epic proportions, textures and shape , literally.
The shapes in Phillip Treacy’s presentation were flawlessly paired with their model and wardrobe but most importantly the fit perfectly with the shapes on the models faces causing a harmony no matter how extreme. Phillip Treacy’s show caused my imagination to wonder and imagine the possibility of recreating these shapes with hair.
Events like fashion week can inspired us for reasons beyond the face value beauty and clothing we would love to own. As hair stylists or as clients, surrounding ourselves with the work of artists that inspire us grows both our artistry and personal style.
What is your favorite part about the runway shows?
Next up MILANO!

Who had a tough time getting their motors going this Monday morning? Was a living room Emmy party to blame?

Most of us may not have been at the show or at an after party but it is always fun to watch  our favorite t.v. personalities get dolled up…and set out a spread of hor d’oeuvres and sparkly drinks for ourselves while we gawk at the dapper men, elegant ladies and occasional train-wreck. We share in the victories of our favorites both on the red carpet and on the stage…and get a tad sniffly when the tribute portion begins.

Unless we go to the occasional gala or are gearing up for prom, events like the Emmy’s create a fantasy world of ball gowns and perfect hair and make-up; A world where men still wear suits and the ladies undergarments make the dress. We love seeing this modern take on elegance and how the catwalk shows leading up to the Emmy’s every year can help set our stars and starlettes up for success.

Take a look below for a few of our favorite red carpet looks that could be right off of the NYFW runways.

January Jones with a deep side part, slick shiny locks … looks like a perfect pony is here to stay!

The ever flawless Julianne Moore in a center part with a lived in voluminous texture.

Hiedi Klum rocks a retro influenced soft wave with this slight 70′s reminiscent set.

We can always count on Kelly Osborne to bring some color into our lives, and after the looks on the runway for Anna Sui…we are sure she wont be the only one for long…

Who rocked your favorite Emmy’s look?

Check back in a few days for a London and Milan Fashion Week Recap!

…with that being said, I can’t wait to see what looks good on the Mastery.
My name is Jamie Anderbery, Design Leader at the Mastery, and I am checking in with
you today, this gorgeous Friday, to bring you inspiration, bright ideas, food for thought,
and to see what we can color between the lines.

Today I am consumed with oogling over Pantone’s Fashion Color Report for Spring
2013 and HOW I can put everything it radiates on some hair. Between the dynamic
brights it represents (like the lively Poppy Red or smiling Lemon Zest) all the way to the
mellow yet bold families of color (like the calming Dusk Blue, Grayed Jade, and a sweet,
warm neutral Linen pink), they’re all just begging to be mixed and matched. Whether
they’re strategically placed side by side, mixed and shaken together, or allowed to stand
on their own to be expressive and demand the attention they deserve, here are some
images of color placements i am LOVING and are screaming for these Pantone colors
to just love on them… I’m feeling the bold and blocky statement right now, if you couldn’t tell.

What’s your favorite Trend color right now? Would you wear it?!

See you next Friday!

-Jamie
